Guatemala Extra Hard Coffee has a unique microclimate at an altitude of about 1,350 meters. This unique geographical environment allows the dry and hot air from the Tehuantepec Plain to mix with the fresh breeze from the Cuhumatanes Mountains, forming a protective bubble. The microclimate here protects the coffee flowers and coffee cherries from frost. It also allows for the slow growth of coffee grown at some of the highest altitudes in the world.
Coffee berries ripened at higher altitudes produce harder beans and different flavor profiles, depending on the location. Any coffee grown above 1,350 meters is given the designation of extra hard bean (SHB) to indicate its unique characteristics.
